Air and Metamorphosis for solo flute

Air (1959) is a simple melody, written when I was a post-graduate at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. It is dedicated to Betty Mills who gave many performances from the early 1960s onwards.

Metamorphosis (1955/7) turns a diatonic melody into a hectic cadenza, taken from Translations for recorder, viola da gamba and harpsichord (1971) written for David Munrow, Oliver Brooks and Christopher Hogwood. The Air also has connections with the recorder since a version of it appears in Recorder Music (1973) written for David Munrow and recorded by him.
